REPORT
20 years on and still going strong for last Saturday’s annual Lincolnshire
Wolds 10 mile Road Race, known to locals as the “Tough Ten”.Amongst the
competitors were 4 people who where on the original line up of around 100
runners in the 1983 events. These
were John Barker, taking part in his 16th Tough Ten, 75 year old
Dennis Holt in his 15th event, Susan Green in her 13th and
Martin Anderson in his 10th event.. Also assisting on the day, who
were in the original line up were, Steve Green, Josie Revel, as well as Jenny
Clark, who walked the course in 2hrs 13 mins and 34 secs..
Although in it’s 20th running, it was a quiet affair, with only around 50 competing in the challenging undulating circuit, which this year had a new start and finish from the Swallow Inn, instead of the usual start in Rothwell village. The course loop was the same as in previous years, but most of the competitors found the route a little easier, having a flatter start, instead of the usual sharp climb out of Rothwell village. Comments were made over the challenging climb from Croxby to Beelsby, between the 6 and 7 mile mark, but it’s still the “Tough Ten” and no matter were started from, the hills are still out there to be run.The start line was dominated by the blue and yellow vests from Cleethorpes AC’s members, and it was those runners who took most of the leading places.
From the gun, on a bright sunny, but breezy day a large group were soon to the fore, which was soon whittled down to Cleethorpes AC’s J Barker, H Powles, G Coulam, along with Martin Anderson of Grimsby Harriers and Mark Anderson of Lincoln and District. After going through the first mile in a steady 6 mins.15secs, these five were together until 4 miles, when Hylton Powles dropped off the pace, and shortly after Gary Coulam and Mark Anderson broke away. These 2 ran side by side from then on, with Mark trying to make a break before the final left turn towards Swallow at 8.5 miles.Gary hung on and the 2 agreed to cross the line together in 61mins 42 secs, the first dead heat in the races history and the first time it has been won in over the hour mark.Martin Anderson hung on for 3rd place in 62 mins 9 secs.
First female was Beverley Wilson of Cleethorpes AC
repeating her win of last year. in
64 mins 46 secs in overall 7th place, with Fay Fenwick 2nd also of
Cleethorpes in 71 mins 56 secs.
There were no awards this year, just spot prizes, presented after the race at the Swallow Inn, giving everybody the chance to win something. The race organisers Wolds Vets, would like to thank the landlord of the Swallow Inn for the use of the premises, and to all who assisted on the day.
The final Club Championship race is the Ducks and Drakes 10 mile off road race from Washingborough in Lincoln on October 19th.
